Most guides on ranking in AI Overviews list the same twenty tips and sprinkle in statistics nobody can trace. We'd rather start from what Google itself says, then add what we see in practice when we audit business websites. The short version: there is no secret AI Overviews setting. There is a set of fundamentals that most business sites get partly wrong, and fixing them is what moves the needle.
What does Google officially say about appearing in AI Overviews?
Google's Search Central page "AI features and your website" is explicit. To be eligible as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet. Google states there are no additional requirements and no special optimizations necessary. It also says you don't need special schema.org markup or new machine-readable or "AI text" files for these features.
Two more details from the same page matter for strategy:
- Query fan-out. Both features may run multiple related searches across subtopics to build an answer. That means a page can be cited for a question it doesn't rank first for, as long as it answers one of the sub-questions well.
- Reporting. Traffic from AI features is included in Search Console's Performance report under the "Web" search type. It isn't broken out separately, so you need your own tracking for citations.
So the job is not to "optimize for AI Overviews" as a separate channel. It's to make sure Google can index your pages, trust them, and lift a clean answer out of them.
Step 1: Is your page indexable and snippet-eligible?
Start here, because everything else is wasted if this fails.
- Run the URL Inspection tool in Search Console on your key service pages. Confirm they are indexed and that the rendered HTML contains your main text.
- Check for
nosnippet,max-snippet:0ordata-nosnippeton important content. These limit what Google can show, including in AI features. - Make sure robots.txt, your CDN and any security plugin allow Googlebot. Aggressive bot protection blocks more legitimate crawlers than people realise.
- If your site relies on client-side JavaScript to render text, move to server-side rendering or pre-rendering. It helps Google and it is essential for other AI assistants that don't render scripts.
Step 2: Can Google lift a clean answer from your page?
AI Overviews summarise. Pages that bury the answer under a long introduction are harder to use. On every page that targets a question:
- Answer first. Put a direct 40–60 word answer right under the main heading.
- Use question-shaped headings that match how people ask: "How long does a kitchen renovation take?" rather than "Timelines".
- One idea per paragraph, with specifics: what, who, where, how long, what affects it.
- Tables for comparisons and numbered lists for processes. They are easy to parse and to quote.
- Real FAQs from your sales calls, not invented filler.
Because of query fan-out, cover the sub-questions around your main topic too: cost factors, timelines, alternatives, risks, local specifics. Each one is another chance to be a supporting link.
Step 3: Does structured data still matter?
Not as an AI Overviews requirement; Google says no special schema is needed. It still earns its place for two reasons. First, Organization, LocalBusiness, Service, Article and FAQ markup make your business details unambiguous across Google's systems. Second, other assistants and search engines use it too. The rule Google does stress: structured data must match the visible text on the page. Our Romanian schema markup guide covers the implementation.
Step 4: Is your business a clear, consistent entity?
- Use the same business name, address, phone and short description on your site, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn and industry directories.
- Keep Google Business Profile and, for retailers, Merchant Center data current; Google lists both in its guidance for AI features.
- Have an about page that states plainly what you do, for whom and where, with real people behind the business.
Step 5: What E-E-A-T signals should you add?
Experience, expertise, authoritativeness and trust aren't a score you can set, but you can show them. Name the author or team behind each guide. Show real project photos and case studies rather than stock images. State results you can back up. Cite sources for any figure you use. Link to your own deeper pages internally so Google understands your topical coverage.
Step 6: Are other sites talking about you?
When AI Overviews answer comparison questions ("best X in Y", "X vs Y"), the supporting links are often third-party articles, review platforms and directories. Earning mentions there is slow work: expert quotes for journalists, case studies with partners, genuine reviews, listings on respected industry sites. It is also the step most competitors skip.
Step 7: How do you track AI Overview citations?
Since Search Console doesn't separate AI Overview traffic, build a simple manual tracker:
| Column | What to record |
|---|---|
| Query | 30 real questions your customers ask, mixing informational and commercial |
| AI Overview shown? | Yes / no, since not every query triggers one |
| Cited? | Is your domain among the supporting links? |
| Which page | The URL cited, so you know what works |
| Competitors cited | Who appears instead of you, and on which source |
| AI Mode | Same checks in AI Mode, which may cite different pages |
Run it monthly, in a logged-out browser window and from the country you target. Results vary by location and session, so read trends over several months rather than single checks. Pair it with Search Console impressions for the same queries.
What does this look like in practice?
The sites we build start from these foundations: server-rendered content, answer-first service pages, consistent business data and structured data that matches the page. That's how our clients reach the top of classic results. GrandParentsHouse ranks second for "azil bătrâni Pitești" (care home) and Emfy Lux Construct second for "construcții Argeș" (construction). Those same signals are what Google's AI features draw on. We wrote a Romanian-language version of this topic in Google AI Overviews for businesses, and the companion guide for ChatGPT is how to get recommended by ChatGPT.
If you'd rather have this done for you, our SEO and AI visibility team runs the audit, fixes the foundations and tracks your citations monthly.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need special markup to appear in Google AI Overviews?
No. Google states there are no additional requirements or special schema for AI Overviews or AI Mode. The page must be indexed and eligible to be shown with a snippet. Structured data still helps make business details clear, as long as it matches the visible text.
Can I see AI Overviews traffic in Search Console?
Partly. Traffic from AI features is included in the Performance report under the Web search type, but it isn't shown separately. Use a manual query tracker to see when you are cited.
Does an llms.txt file help with AI Overviews?
Google says you don't need new machine-readable or AI text files to appear in its AI features. An llms.txt file may help other AI tools understand your site, but it isn't a factor for AI Overviews.
Why is my page ranking well but not cited in AI Overviews?
AI Overviews may use different pages than the top organic results, partly because of query fan-out. Pages that answer the question directly, early and clearly are easier to cite. Check for snippet restrictions such as nosnippet or max-snippet as well.
How long does it take to get cited in AI Overviews?
There is no fixed timeline. Once pages are indexed and answer questions clearly, citations can appear within weeks for less competitive queries. Competitive commercial topics usually take months of content and authority work.
Can I stop Google from using my content in AI Overviews?
You can limit what is shown with nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet or noindex. These controls also affect how your pages appear in regular search results.
