Perplexity is where a growing number of people go when they want an answer with sources attached. For a business, that changes the goal. There is no page two to climb from. Either your page is one of the handful of sources linked in the answer, or the answer is built from your competitors' pages. The good news: the mechanics are more transparent than ChatGPT's, because Perplexity shows its sources on every answer.
How does Perplexity choose its sources?
For most questions Perplexity searches the web at the moment the question is asked, retrieves a set of pages, reads the passages that look relevant and writes an answer with numbered citations. According to Perplexity's own crawler documentation, it uses two user agents:
- PerplexityBot indexes websites so they can appear and be linked in Perplexity's search results.
- Perplexity-User fetches a page when a user's question needs it, acting on the user's behalf.
So the first filter is technical: if PerplexityBot cannot reach your pages, you are not in the pool. After that, it is about whether your page contains the passage that best answers the question, and whether the page looks trustworthy and current.
What signals seem to matter most?
Perplexity does not publish a ranking formula, so be wary of anyone who claims to know it. These are the factors that consistently make sense in testing and that line up with how retrieval systems work:
- Crawlability. Content in the HTML, not only rendered by JavaScript, and no firewall rules blocking bots.
- Classic search visibility. Pages that are well indexed and already rank in Google and Bing are easier to retrieve.
- A passage that answers the question. A clear 40 to 60 word answer under a heading phrased like the question gets quoted far more easily than a sales slogan.
- Freshness. Visible "updated" dates and current information matter for anything time-sensitive, such as prices, regulations or "best of 2026" lists.
- Third-party confirmation. Mentions in reputable directories, roundup articles, press and review sites.
- Structured data. Organization, LocalBusiness, Service, FAQPage and Article schema remove guesswork about who you are and what you offer.
Google SEO vs Perplexity visibility: what is different?
| Google search | Perplexity | |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | A position in a list of results | A citation inside an answer |
| Unit that wins | The whole page | A passage on the page |
| Number of winners | Ten blue links plus features | A handful of sources |
| Freshness | Important for some queries | Very visible, dates are shown |
| Measurement | Search Console positions | Prompt tests, referral traffic, logs |
What is the step-by-step plan for a business?
- Check robots.txt and your firewall. Allow PerplexityBot. If you use Cloudflare or a security plugin, confirm verified bots are not being challenged.
- Get indexed properly. Submit your sitemap to Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools, and use IndexNow so new pages are picked up quickly.
- Write answer-first pages. For each service, open with a direct answer: what you do, where, for whom, and what makes you different. Then details, then FAQs.
- Build comparison and "how to choose" content. Many Perplexity questions are comparisons. Honest pages that explain options, including when you are not the right fit, get cited.
- Keep dates and facts current. Update key pages when something changes and show the date. Remove outdated claims.
- Earn mentions. Directories in your niche, local press, partner pages and roundup articles that Perplexity already cites for your topic.
- Collect genuine reviews on Google and the platforms relevant to your industry.
- Add structured data and, if you like, an llms.txt file at your domain root.
Why is a "guaranteed Perplexity ranking" a red flag?
Because there is nothing stable to guarantee. The same question can produce different sources depending on wording, the model the user selects, their location and the day. Perplexity has also experimented with sponsored content, which is labelled and separate from organic citations. Nobody outside Perplexity controls which pages it cites. What an agency can promise is the work: technical access, content built to be cited, mentions and a transparent way of measuring the result.
How do you verify that Perplexity cites you?
This is the workflow we use for clients:
- Write 20 to 30 real prompts your customers would ask, from broad ("best web design agency in Romania") to specific ("who builds websites for dental clinics in Europe").
- Run them monthly in a fresh thread, ideally logged out, and record every cited domain.
- Track your share: how many prompts cite you, and which competitors appear most.
- Check analytics for referral traffic from perplexity.ai.
- Check server logs for PerplexityBot visits, to confirm it is actually crawling your new pages.
- Fix the gaps: for prompts where a competitor is cited, read the cited passage and ask why it is a better answer than yours.
The same discipline works across assistants. Our guide on how to get recommended by ChatGPT covers OpenAI's crawlers and Bing's role, and our article on choosing an SEO agency in Romania explains what to expect from an SEO and GEO engagement. We do this work as part of our SEO and AI visibility service, on the same pages that rank our clients in Google.
Frequently asked questions
Can I pay to be cited by Perplexity?
No. There is no paid route into Perplexity's organic citations. Perplexity has experimented with ads, but those are labelled as sponsored and are separate from the sources it cites in answers.
Which crawler does Perplexity use?
Perplexity documents two user agents: PerplexityBot, which indexes pages for search results, and Perplexity-User, which fetches pages when a user's question requires it. Allow PerplexityBot in robots.txt and make sure your firewall does not block it.
Does Google SEO help with Perplexity?
Yes. Perplexity retrieves pages from the live web, and pages that are well indexed and rank well in classic search are easier for it to find. Perplexity visibility builds on SEO rather than replacing it.
How long does it take to get cited by Perplexity?
Once a page is crawlable and indexed, it can be cited quickly because Perplexity searches in real time. Being cited consistently for competitive questions usually takes a few months of content, mentions and reviews.
Does llms.txt help with Perplexity?
There is no public confirmation that Perplexity uses llms.txt. It is cheap to add and does no harm, but crawlable HTML, clear answers and third-party mentions matter far more.
Can an agency guarantee a top citation on Perplexity?
No. Answers change with the wording of the question, the model selected, the user's location and the date. Treat any guarantee as a red flag and ask for a measurement method instead.
