What counts as custom software?
Custom software is anything built for the way your business actually runs, instead of bending your process around an off-the-shelf tool. In practice, most projects we get asked about fall into a handful of groups:
- Internal systems – order tracking, job scheduling, stock, approvals, reporting dashboards that pull data from several places into one screen.
- Customer-facing web apps – portals, booking flows, configurators, client areas behind a login.
- Mobile apps – for field teams, for customers, or as a companion to an existing service.
- Automations – connecting the tools you already pay for so data stops being copied by hand between them.
- Chatbots and AI assistants – answering repeat questions, qualifying leads, searching internal documents.
- Platforms and products – software you plan to sell or license to others.
The common thread: you have a process that costs time, money or customers, and nothing on the shelf fits well enough.
Should you build custom software or buy an off-the-shelf tool?
Buy first if a mainstream tool covers most of what you need and your process is standard: accounting, email, basic CRM. Build when the process is what makes you different, when you are paying for several tools and still copying data between them, or when staff work around the software instead of with it. Often the right answer is a mix: keep the tools that work and build the small piece that connects them.
Why do companies build custom software in Romania?
Romania has a large, well-trained engineering community, English is widely spoken in tech, and the country is inside the EU, so GDPR, invoicing and contracts work the way Western European clients expect. Time zones overlap fully with the rest of Europe and partially with the US East Coast, which makes live calls easy.
The less obvious reason is team shape. A smaller Romanian studio can put the same people on your project from first call to launch, which is often what larger outsourcing setups struggle to offer.
What does our own work look like?
We prefer showing to claiming. A few things we built and that are public:
- Meniu 3D – our own product: guests scan a QR code on the table and see a dish in 3D, at real scale, next to their plate. It runs in the browser, so there is nothing to install.
- Lumea lui Liviu – a task manager that looks like a game. It exists because the team would not open any standard task tool; this one they open.
- TeoDreams – a client brought us a children's book and we delivered an animated series, with a web presence to match.
- Internal automation systems – tools we run ourselves to move leads, tasks and reports between systems without manual copying.
None of these started with a long specification. Each started with one sentence describing what had to change.
How does a custom software project run?
- Discovery. We talk to the people who will use the system, not only to the person who signs off. We map the current workflow and where it breaks.
- Scope. We cut the idea down to a first version that solves the core problem. Everything else goes on a written list for later.
- Clickable prototype. You see screens and flows before any serious code is written. Changes here are cheap.
- Build in short cycles. Working software every one or two weeks, on a staging link you can open yourself.
- Testing with real users. A small group uses it on real work and we fix what they hit.
- Launch and handover. Code repository, hosting accounts, credentials and documentation transferred to you.
- Support. Fixes, updates and the next items from the list, at the pace you choose.
How much does custom software cost?
We do not publish price lists, because two projects with the same name can differ enormously. What actually moves the budget:
| Factor | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Number of user roles | Each role (admin, staff, client) needs its own screens and permissions. |
| Integrations | Every external system – accounting, CRM, payments, maps – needs access, testing and error handling. |
| Platforms | Web only, or web plus iOS and Android, changes the amount of work. |
| Data migration | Moving and cleaning years of spreadsheets is real work. |
| Compliance | Personal or health data, audit logs and access rules add requirements. |
| Support after launch | Hosting, monitoring and updates are an ongoing cost, not a one-off. |
The cheapest way to control cost is a tight first version. A focused system that people use beats a large one they avoid.
How do you check a software partner before signing?
- Ask to click through something they built, live, not only see screenshots.
- Ask who exactly will work on your project and whether those people stay to the end.
- Ask how often you will see working software. "At the end" is the wrong answer.
- Check that the contract transfers code and intellectual property to you on payment.
- Ask what happens if you want to move to another team later. A good partner makes that easy.
If you are also weighing a new website alongside the software, our guide to website development in Romania covers that side. For process automation specifically, see AI automation in Romania. The full offer is on our custom apps and software service page.
Frequently asked questions
Do I own the code when the project ends?
You should, and with us you do. The contract transfers the source code and intellectual property to you, and the repository and hosting accounts are set up in your name or transferred at handover.
Can you work with an existing system instead of starting from zero?
Yes. Often the better move is to extend or connect what you already have. We review the current system first and tell you honestly whether to build on it or replace it.
Do you work with clients outside Romania?
Yes. We work in English with clients across Europe and beyond, with calls, shared boards and staging links, so distance does not slow the project down.
How long does a custom software project take?
It depends on scope. A focused first version is usually a matter of weeks; larger systems are delivered in stages, each one usable on its own.
What technologies do you use?
We choose the stack by the problem: modern JavaScript and TypeScript frameworks for web apps, cross-platform tools for mobile, and widely used databases and cloud hosting so other developers can take over if needed.
What happens after launch?
You can take everything in-house, or keep us on for fixes, updates and new features. There is no lock-in either way.
Have a process that eats hours every week?
Tell us in a few sentences what breaks. We will tell you whether software is the right fix and what a first version could look like.
